Display this slide as children come into the assembly.

2 What is Great Britain? Ask: What is Great Britain?
Allow time for the children to look at the map and offer their ideas. Explain that Great Britain is the countries, England, Scotland and Wales. Along with Northern Ireland, Great Britain is part of the United Kingdom.

Ask: What does it mean to be British? Allow time for the children to share their ideas. Explain that being British can mean you were born in Britain, but it can also describe how you behave. Being British means you respect and follow the country’s rules, laws and values. ? ? ?

Those values are: democracy rule of law individual liberty tolerance and respect You might like to ask the children if they have any ideas about what these values mean, before you explore each value in more depth.

6 What is democracy? Ask: What is democracy?
Give the children time to look at the slide, describe what they can see and explain how the images link to the value of democracy. Explain that if people are practising democracy, they are being democratic. Being democratic is about fairness and giving everyone the equal right to voice their opinion. It helps people work together and be part of a team, working towards the same goal. Being democratic is also about listening to others and trying to understand how they think. Ask: Can you think of an example of democracy in action in school?

7 What is rule of law? Ask: What is rule of law?
Give the children time to look at the slide, describe what they can see and explain how the images link to the value of rule of law. Explain that if people are practising rule of law, they are being lawful. Rule of law is an agreed and shared sense of what is right and wrong. It’s also about enforcing rules and laws through our public sector, which includes the police, courts, judges and governing bodies. As a value, rule of law ensures a peaceful approach to everyday life where everyone abides by the same laws and no one gets treated differently. Ask: Can you think of an example of rule of law in school?

8 What is individual liberty?
Ask: What is individual liberty? Give the children time to look at the slide, describe what they can see and explain how the images link to the value of individual liberty. Explain that if people have individual liberty, they have the freedom and right to think and express what they feel, as long as it is within the laws of the country. That means having individual liberty is also about being responsible for what you say and do, as it will have a direct effect on other people. In Britain, we are free to express ourselves with confidence and independence, but we must take responsibility for the consequences of our actions. Ask: Can you think of an example of individual liberty in action in school?

9 What is tolerance and respect?
Ask: What is tolerance and respect? Give the children time to look at the slide, describe what they can see and explain how the images link to the value of tolerance and respect. Explain that if people are practising tolerance and respect, they are being tolerant and respectful. Tolerance and respect is about understanding, listening to and living alongside people who have a different belief, faith and lifestyle to you. It’s about showing empathy, thoughtfulness and understanding that there is no one way to be British. We are all different and that is something we should celebrate. Ask: Can you think of an example of tolerance and respect in action in school?

Explain that these important values help us to be good people who can make a positive contribution to school, our community and the wider world.
