1 Prediction of (TiO2)x(Cu2O)y Alloys for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

The main drawback for its usage as a photocathode is its weak light adsorption near the band edge (dipole forbidden band gap) and instability in aqueous solutions. Anatase TiO2 can decompose water into oxygen and hydrogen without the application of an external voltage under certain conditions because of its suitable band edges and stability in aqueous solutions. However, its optical gap is too wide to absorb visible light effectively. Grätzel, M. Nature 2001, 414, 338. P. E. de Jongh et al. J. Electrochem. Soc., 2000, 147 (2) 486. Can we combine these two binary oxides to make good solar-driven water splitting materials ? Results & Discussion The coordination numbers of Ti atoms and Cu atoms are found to be the same with those in bulk TiO2 and bulk Cu2O for almost all studied alloy structures. The formation energies are typically around a few tens of meV per atom and the predicted direct gaps are around 2.1 eV. The alloys have much stronger absorption of visible light compared to both bulk Cu2O and TiO2 The band alignment between anatase TiO2 and the alloy is of type II. Moreover, It is clear that the CB of the alloy is above the hydrogen reduction potential and the VB is below the oxygen oxidation potential, which is suitable for PEC water splitting. A large VB offset between the alloy and anatase TiO2 is observed, which mainly results from the low binding energy of the Cu 3d orbitals. On the other hand, due to quantum confinement of the isolated Ti-O layers, the CB of the alloy is above that of anatase TiO2. The upper valence bands are derived from the hybridization between the O 2p and Cu 3d states, while the lower conduction bands are dominated by the empty 3d states of Ti. Conclusions The stable structures of (TiO2)x(Cu2O)y alloys were obtained using the global optimization evolutionary algorithm; The optical band gaps of the obtained alloys are around 2.1 eV, and they absorb much more visible light than the TiO2 and Cu2O component oxides; (TiO2)2(Cu2O) has the lowest formation energy among all studied alloys and its band edge energies are predicted to be suitable for visible-light-driven water splitting.
