Say-Mean-Matter: Diction and Setting
You may work with a partner or by yourself. Read the instructions on the Say-Mean-Matter sheet in your packet. Ask questions if you are confused. In the Mean column, “translate”/paraphrase each quote. In the Matter column, explain how these words create the setting, tone, and mood of the story. For the last row of the chart, you must find another quote from the story that creates setting, tone, or mood. Include a page number.

You may use your earbuds and devices to access the audio. Remember to follow along in your book. You only remember 10% of what you hear! Complete the Prove-It statements on the next slide. If you get confused, refer to a summary for help. Be resourceful! To answer the homework questions, you will also need to read parts I- III of the background class notes on the class website.
