Used labor-saving agricultural tools such as the reaper to create large-scale commercial agriculture
Increased productivity
The South Economy Died
Took away labor source (slaves), killed 40% of live stock, destroyed farm machinery and railroads
South went from holding 30% of the country’s wealth to having only 12%

4. Lincoln Assassinated He was killed 5 days after the South surrendered
John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln while at the theater with his wife
Booth was found and killed 12 days later
Lincoln was the first president to be assassinated

Also term to refer to the process the federal government used to readmit the Confederate states

7. Lincoln’s Plan Wanted to admit South States as quick as possible
Willing to pardon almost all of the Confederate except the top ranking and people that committed crimes against prisoners of war
Created the Ten Percent Plan
Needed 10% of the 1860 voting lists to pledge allegiance. Then, a confederate state could form a new gov’t and gain representation in Congress
Radical Republicans didn’t like this plan

Wanted to destroy political power of former slave owners
Wanted to give African Americans full citizenship and the right to vote
Proposed the Wade-Davis Bill
Congress, not the President, was responsible for Reconstruction
Required majority, not 10%, to swear allegiance before re-admittance
President Lincoln veto pocketed the bill which upset the radicals

9. African Americans
Freedman’s Bureau was created to help Blacks in the South with food, schooling, and healthcare
Fourteenth Amendment passed promising everyone full citizenship
Fifteenth Amendment guaranteed all males the right to vote
South continued to make it hard to vote and the KKK threatened African Americans when they went to vote
