SAT is an additional opportunity to show colleges how well a student can apply the skills learned in high school.
It is a reasoning test designed to test critical thinking skills as well as knowledge.
The ACT is an assessment test designed to test how much a student has learned in high school.
ASVAB-Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery - developed and maintained by the Dept. of Defense.
The military uses students’ scores to identify the occupations that best suit their abilities - All ROTC students will take this exam in the Spring.

4. ACT Prep ACT Prep Classes Sycamore Learning Co. – 9/24 & 9/25 - $85
Information on other prep choices – available in the Guidance Office.
Free Prep class for all juniors-before spring break-3 hour class will take place during school hours.
ACT is free and you do not need to register for it.
ZAPS offered in fall and spring - Scholarships available for ZAPS

9. HOPE Scholarship $16,000 over 4 years at 4 year University
GPA of 3.0 (by the end of senior year) or a 21 on ACT
FAFSA application must be completed in order to receive the Hope Scholarship. - Senior year

GPA 2.0 or above
95% attendance
80 hours of Community Service
Any combination of 2 CTE credits, AP classes, Dual Enrollment classes or Fine Art classes
No Out of School Suspensions
CTE -Career Technical Education - agriculture, business technology, family and consumer science, etc.

11. Graduating with Academic Honors

*Students who score at, or above, all of the subject readiness benchmarks on the ACT or equivalent score on the SAT will graduate with honors.
*Readiness Benchmarks:
English – 18
Math – 22
Reading – 22
Science - 23
This is the first year with the new criteria for graduating with honors or distinction. In the past, it was based solely on GPA.

12. Academic Honors
Graduation with Distinction – Students will be recognized by attaining a “B” average and completing one of the following:
Earn a nationally recognized industry certification.
Participate in at least one of the Governor’s Schools.
Participate in one of the state’s All-State musical organizations.

13. Graduation with Distinction
Be selected as either a National Merit Finalist or Semi-Finalist (this is determined by PSAT score).
Attain a composite ACT score of 31 or higher.
Attain a score of 3 or higher on at least 2 AP exams.
Earn 12 or more semester hours of transcripted college credit.

14. Preparing for College
Be Proactive – Use the internet to become familiar with college/tech school applications and deadlines for applying and scholarship opportunities.
Attend college fairs.
Talk to campus representatives when they visit our school.
Visit college campuses during breaks.
Prepare for the ACT.

16. Summer Opportunities
Governor’s School – 12 summer programs for Sophomores and Juniors -
Print application for school interested.
Gov. Schools of TN include 9 residential summer programs for sophomores and juniors.
These are month long programs at TN Universities for students who rank in the top of their class. The application process usually takes place in Dec.- See Mrs. Ganley
Free and are good to put on scholarship applications as well as college applications. Shows that the student has gone above and beyond and has potential.
Students can also earn college credit hours.
Students are highly encouraged to take DE, AP and Honors classes
DE- students who complete and pass the course may earn HS and college credit. It is the student’s responsibility to verify that the credit will be accepted at the university they will attend. - Prerequisites in subject area and ACT composite score of 19 and on the appropriate subtest.
AP - 5 pts. added to final grade for a grade of C or higher which is avg. in GPA
Honors - 3 pts. added to final grade .5 -GPA

It is never too early to start looking for scholarships. The sooner you start searching, the more scholarships you will find and the greater your chances of winning a scholarship.
Start narrowing down potential colleges and look at their websites for scholarships.
Fastweb.com- is a free scholarship matching service. It is a targeted matching process that helps students focus on just the scholarships they are eligible for.
Look for local awards - guidance website, local newspaper, especially in the coupon section.
Many national brands such as Tylenol, Coca Cola, etc. offer scholarships and promote them in the Sunday newspaper coupon section.
Ask organizations which you are associated whether they offer any scholarships. Ex. Your employer, unions, fraternal org., religious org., volunteer groups, etc.
Don’t skip small scholarships. Apply for every scholarship you are eligible for, no matter how small or large.
Create an accomplishments resume-one page summary of most significant activities, interests, hobbies, awards, etc.
Get letters of recommendations
Scholarship essays – proofread 3 times.
Beware of scholarship scams – you should never pay anyone to search scholarships for you – legitimate scholarships give out money,
