Shari’ah Law LO: To explore the Shari’ah law as a legal system.
To evaluate the need for Shari’ah in modern day. Do Now: Look at the Penal Code of Iran. A Shia state run by Shari’ah law. What are your thoughts?

Halal, Makruh, Haram,. Write a definition for these three key terms.
Give as many examples as you can for each. If Halal is desired. Haram is forbidden. What might Makruh be? (its in-between)

Answer: What is Shari’ah and why do we need it? What are the sources of Shari'ah? What does the word Fiqh mean and what does it cover? How does Shari’ah law compare to man made law? What does Shari’ah law divide human activities into?

Think, Pair, Share: Will Shari’ah law be the same everywhere?
There are five different schools of interpretation of sharia: one in the Shia tradition of Islam and four in the Sunni tradition. Middle Eastern countries of the former Ottoman empire favour the Hanafi doctrine and north African countries prefer the Maliki doctrine; Indonesia and Malaysia follow the Shafi'i doctrine; Saudi Arabia adheres to the Hanbali doctrine; and Iran follows the Shia Jaafari school. All the schools are similar, but some take a more literal approach to texts while others prefer a loose interpretation.
