1 P17001: Wearable Interface Design Iterations Team Intro & Background
Requirements Goal Create a wearable device to sense user input and interface with a mobile device to supplement texting Eliminate distraction Provide proof-of-concept Develop input sensor system & typing scheme Investigated various sensors to implement this idea, but decided on mechanical switches Customer Low Profile Lightweight Communicates wirelessly Comfortable to wear Capable of interacting with visual display Limited electronics on fingers Accommodate different hand sizes Weighs less than 1 pound Less than 6 steps to put on/take off Lag time is less than 100 ms Protrudes less than 1” off hand Battery life is longer than 2 hours for full use Engineering Design Iterations CAD Model Adjustable knot Chain pulls Cord locks Final Design Analysis and Testing Recommendations Mechanical Switch Activator Designed adaptor enabling switch to be activated by string Adjustable Function Paracord combined with push button cord locks allowed for device to be adjustable to any hand size Device Casing Designed to fully encapsulate device while allowing user to interact with on/off button, LED and adjust size of finger loops Software & Electrical Utilizes Teensy 3.2 (Cortex M4): Converts binary user input to ASCII characters and transmits to Bluetooth module. Additionally provides vibration and LED user feedback. Device has 56 unique character inputs Alphanumeric Special Characters Wireless Bluetooth communication between device and phone Multiple PCB’s can be used to introduce flexibility, as well as decrease the surface area of the device through stacking Investigate adding an accelerometer to the device to incorporate hand gestures Consider component replacements to drive miniaturization Team From left: Arshia Sasson (EE), Nick Jakse (EE), Nicole Sauter (IE), Jaclyn Amann (BME), Carolyn Krasniak (BME), Emmanuel Aire (EE) Acknowledgments George Slack and Russel Phelps (Guides) Willow Baker (Customer) Dr. DeBartolo & MSD Office
