Government Takes Many Forms
Chapter 1 Section 3- -Pg Objectives: -TSW understand the differences between the different types of government.

Autocracy-ruled by one.
The most common form has been monarchy absolute - rulers had total, unlimited authority and power. Limited - ruler’s power can be checked by law and by the authority of a lawmaking body (Norway) Constitutional - rulers share authority with elected legislatures. Mainly ceremonial heads of state. (England-Sweden) Dictatorship - acquire and maintain leadership through fear and force.

Oligarchy-ruled by a small group
Some based on wealth and social position - aristocracy Some have been ruled by religious leaders or by a council of older people Modern - based on military or political power Russia - China - Latin America

Totalitarian-- rulers attempt to reshape the state, the people and the society to conform to an idea or plan Most extreme form of authoritarian gov’t, developed in the 20th century. Rulers control many aspects of society and of people’s personal lives. Often uses terror or violence to control Could not exist before 20th century because didn’t have technology. Mussolini, Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Saddam Hussein

Democracy-rule by the people
Selected by the state’s adult citizens and respond to their wishes Began in city-states of ancient Greece direct - all citizens have a chance to participate on a first hand basis representative - the people elect a relatively small group of citizens to represent them in making laws and establishing public policies United States - Canada - France - Israel

Republic or Democracy Representative developed in ancient Rome
Republic - any gov’t in which the people exercise their political power through elected representatives, and no public offices are inherited. U.S. is both a democracy and a republic
