A flaw in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant caused an explosion that leaked Iodine radiation over European countries on April 26, 1986.

Scientists reported about 190 metric tons of uranium dioxide fuel and fission products were held in the Chernobyl 4 reactors.

About 13 to 30 percent escaped into the atmosphere.

The Iodine radiation that was exposed to the environment caused many health issues such as thyroid/cardiovascular cancer, stress/depression/anxiet y symptoms, and congenital malformations.

Death toll was 985,000;many due to cancer

Within 36 hours of the nuclear disaster 115,000 people were evacuated and the government later resettled another 220,000 people.

The Soviets’ government took extensive measures which were:
decontaminating settlements removing substantial amounts of food from human consumption treating pasture providing clean fodder to farm animals.

Things that are being done today:
All of the reactors on the chernobyl are shut down medical care and orphanages require extensive care dealing with the aftermath

The percentage of people being impacted by this disaster have gone down over the years,
But there is still Iodine radiation leftover in the soviet union that will take years until it is completely gone.
