You need to take notes from 6 of the other inventions—and at least 2 from both the 1st and 2nd wave. Concentrate on what it does and why it mattered. Draw a line to the date given for its invention. You will have 15 minutes

First Industrial Revolution: 1760-1840
Occurred in Britain. No one really knows why. It was unintentional. It just happened. It’s roots began far before 1760

Medieval Mechanization
Current scholarship suggests that medieval Europe actually saw a huge increase in engineering inventions. Watermills and windmills allowed people to use natural forces to do work. Europe also led the world in the adoption of an unsung tool—the crane.

However, much of this wealth went to landlords because of the economic system. Average folk would not see the benefits until the late 14th century. What changed?

The Black Death However horrible, the black death eventually made life better for the poor worker. More dead = less workers Less workers = higher value for work Less people = cheaper land The black death from drove wages up.

Britain 1750 A number of innovations in agriculture occurred in Europe starting around 1550. Britain had reaped the benefits more than anyone else. 1750: they were producing more food with less farmers. Cheap food meant farmers needed other ways to make money.

Cottage Textiles People began to spin cloth at home to sell.
This was mostly done by the women while the men worked in the field. This allowed them to supplement their income. Wages were higher in Britain than anywhere in the world, which gave more people the opportunity to invest.

The Spinning Jenny The spinning jenny was invented to make spinning easier. At first they were hand powered but soon people realized that you could hook them up to watermills.

The Spinning Jenny These factories were extremely profitable.
Problem was that there were only so many suitable bodies of water.

The Steam Engine Some unknown entrepreneur realized you could hook a steam engine up to a mill and replace the waterwheel. These produced far more power and you could build a factory anywhere.

The Steam Engine This drove a huge increase in production and factories became increasingly elaborate. Machines like the power loom and machine tools took advantage of all this power. Production skyrockets.

Industrialization slows
By 1740, industrialization had slowed down. A relative lack of new inventions and difficulty acquiring good steel led to slower growth.

The Second Industrial Revolution
The second revolution was much more diverse. It was facilitated by a cheapening of steel through the Bessemer Process. However, the real gain in production was from interchangeable parts.

Interchangeable parts allowed machines to be built separately. This made it much easier to construct them quickly on assembly lines.

Our task You will be researching and making an advertisement for an industrial machine. This is a SEMI-group project. You may work with up to 6 people (or just yourself) You will all do the same machine and can resource share HOWEVER, you will all create your own write up and advertisement.

When was it invented? Which wave of the Industrial Revolution would this belong to? What changes were brought about by the invention of this machine?
