2 What is censorship? “Censorship is the suppression of free speech, public communication or other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by governments, media outlets, authorities or other groups or institutions.” (Wikipedia, 2016)

3 Self-censorship Government, public or private sector organizations, especially school libraries may use censorship within the libraries environment. Self-censorship may apply on different levels within libraries such as the area on acquisition of new items to library collection development.

4 Censorship Vs Selection
Throughout the acquisition process, librarians or library staff will avoid to acquire literature content with sexual, violence or fault language. Selection may apply on acquisition. This action become censorship.

5 Example of literature under censorship

6 Reasons on censorship Protect young adults, avoid them to get the bad behavior or ideas from those harmful literatures. Principals or parents requires the school librarian to ban the literature within library and don’t allow them to check out these books.

7 Censorship or Not American Library Association (2017) suggested not to assign censorship within school libraries. Reasons: Affect young adult on intellectual freedom, restricted their freedom on obtaining information through different kinds of literature.
