How we will work together
Can you remember the group agreement we have already talked about, let’s take a minute to think about them. Teacher notes Read these through with the children. Hopefully the group agreement will be displayed in the classroom already. 3

What do we already know? Can you think of a positive relationship in your life? (this could be a parent, grandma, friend – anyone!) What makes this relationship a good one? Try to think of the personal qualities of yourself and the other person that makes this relationship work so well. Spend 5 minutes in pairs telling each other about why this relationship feels special. The listener can help identify what personal qualities make this relationship work well. Teacher notes: To get started in the right direction and encourage open discussion it may help to share a personal view eg. “I realised that my dad always listened to my side of the story before jumping to conclusions. I always respect and admire people that listen and think I’ve become very good at this too because it’s a quality I admire.” 4

Let’s get started Working on your own, look at the words below and pick out at least 3 or 4 that best describes you, a friend and / or famous person. (You may also add your own words!) Smart Fun Good Listener Thoughtful Brave Creative Independent Loving Confident Humble Calm Understanding Honest Competitive Determined Focussed Flexible Friendly Imaginative Patient Open-minded Persuasive Responsible Out-going Organised Conscientious Cheerful Enthusiastic Dramatic Fair Generous Hard-working Helpful Humorous Loyal Sensitive Resourceful Tolerant Check that everyone can read and understand the words – encourage them to ask if they are not sure of the meaning of any of the words and promote peers to provide explanations and examples. Encourage them to also come up with their own words as this is not an exhaustive list! 5

Identifying Personal Positive Qualities

What does a healthy relationship look like?
Watch the clip and in small groups discuss what you think about Marge and Homer’s relationship. What qualities do you notice? Share your thoughts and reflections back to the class How did you notice them behave towards each other? 8
9
What are the important qualities in a healthy relationship?
Think of the qualities that make a healthy relationship? Who can write the longest list? This can be a whole class discussion or table task– writing key words up on a board. 9
10
Key qualities for healthy relationships include:
Good friends are real and honest with each other They can argue in a healthy way – able to talk through disagreements They accept it’s ok to have other friends too! – We may need different friends to share different aspects of our identity: eg. ‘school friends’ and ‘running club’ friends Trust – means you can feel comfortable sharing personal information Respect – treating them as you would want to be treated Communication and listening: leads to a greater understanding of one another. Nurturing: telling friends how great they are! Go through the concepts above ensuring they are understood 10
11
Offering others positive praise and feedback
Tape a large sheet of paper to your backs Remember to keep your thoughts and words positive All comments will be anonymous Now walk freely around the classroom and write on others backs qualities that you admire about that person 11
12
Benefits of healthy relationships
Reading what others have written about you – how does this make you feel? Thinking about healthy relationships in your life – how do they impact you? 12
13
How has our learning progressed?
Thinking about the qualities of healthy relationships discuss in small groups or pairs which ones do you think you do well and which ones you may wish to improve Remember; relationships and people are never perfect! We may all feel jealousy, anger, uncertainty, etc in friendships that may make us act in harmful or destructive ways When we take responsibility for our feelings, communicate and talk about how we feel, we have a chance to repair and nurture that relationship 13
14
Taking the learning away
Can you come up with 2 things that you may do differently within your friendships to improve them? Pupils may like to write these down and/or share with the group. 14
