Use this map of the Isle of Man to estimate:
Bearings GM4.4 Core Starter Use this map of the Isle of Man to estimate: a the real distance from Castletown to Douglas b the bearing of Castletown from Douglas c the real distance from Peel to Douglas d the bearing of Douglas from Peel Preamble This is a fairly straightforward estimation activity in the context of bearings. Obviously several other questions may be asked using the map. The activity is probably best carried out as a whole-group exercise with the map projected for all to see, although copies of the map could be supplied to pupils. Pupils’ strategies for estimating angles and lengths should be discussed. Answers may be recorded on wipe boards to allow instant remediation. Possible content Estimating bearings and lengths using a scale. Resources None; if the activity is carried out by individuals or small groups, it may be useful to provide copies of the map in addition to projecting it on the whiteboard. Ruler and protractor may be used to check estimates at the end. Solution/Notes 12 km to 18 km 220 to 250 100 to 120 Original Material © Cambridge University Press 2009 Original Material © Cambridge University Press 2009
