MLK’s Christian faith and admiration of Indian leader Mahatma Ghandi’s non-violent protests meant he believed in non-violent direction action = protesting peacefully in a highly visible way to produce maximum publicity.

Protests included: Picketing = Standing outside a segregated shop or diner and asking people not to use it. Boycotts = not using any service that discriminated against black people. Sit-ins = Sitting at a ‘whites only’ lunch counter waiting to be served. Jail-ins = Deliberately getting arrested and filling jails. Mass Marches

Excellent and Convincing Speaker & Good Organiser High-visibility campaign methods got the civil rights movement worldwide recognition. Appealed to white politicians because he stressed non-violence and was willing to work with the government
