Anatomy and Physiology I HS 150
Chapter 1 An introduction to the structure and function of the human body Kyle Black M.S. C.E.S.
2
Objectives ◊ Define Anatomy and Physiology
◊List and discuss in order of increasing complexity the levels of the human body ◊Define the term anatomical position ◊List and define the principle directional terms and sections (planes) used in describing the body and the relationship of body parts to one another ◊List the nine abdominiopelvic regions and the abdominopelvic quadrants ◊List the major cavities of the body and the subdivisions of each. ◊Discuss and contrast the axial and the appendicular subdivisions of the body. Identify a number of specific anatomical regions in each area. ◊Explain the meaning of the term Homeostasis.

The study of the structure of an organism
◊ Define Anatomy and Physiology Anatomy The study of the structure of an organism and the relationships of its parts. Derived from two Greek words that mean “a cutting up” Physiology The study of the functions of living organisms and their parts

◊List and discuss in order of increasing complexity the levels of the human body ~Know these in order~ Atoms – smallest, Molecule – chem. level of organization Cells – smallest living things, not simple ~These three can only be seen with a microscope~ Tissue – an organization of many similar cells that act together to perform a common function Organ - Larger more complex than tissues, a group of several different kinds of tissues arranged so that they can act as a unit of perform a special function.
5
◊Define the term anatomical position
The body is in an erect or standing posture with the arms at the side and palms turned forward. The head and feet also point forward. Why do you need to know this? positioning patients know where body parts are to follow directions Anatomical directions Superior vs. Inferior Anterior vs. posterior Medial vs. lateral Proximal vs. distal Superficial vs. deep
6
◊List and define the principle
directional terms and sections (planes) used in describing the body and the relationship of body parts to one another Sagittal – running front to back dividing the body into left and right sides Frontal (coronal) – running left to right dividing the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions Transverse – horizontal plane or crosswise plane dividing the body into upper and lower portions
