A move from nonviolence, 1965-1968
Selma March would end in violence against the marchers on the Pettus Bridge. Viola Liuzzo would be killed by Klansmen as she transported protestors away from the site. There was an FBI informant in the car with the Klansmen. COINTELPRO would infiltrate the Klan and eventually lead to its disintegration in the late 1960s Impatience with the nonviolent movement would lead to race riots in the mid 1960s through many major cities. A more militant Black Power movement is brewing.

Riots and Distrust Throughout the Civil Rights movement, deaths and poor living conditions would lead to riots in major cities. Watts, 1965 Washington DC, 1968 Detroit, 1968 Some of these riots signified a more militant Civil Rights Movement led by figures such as Huey Newton and Stokely Carmichael.

Black Panthers and Militant Civil Rights
The Black Panther Party formed in 1966 in Oakland as a response to police brutality and harassment in the region. They promoted social programs and health clinics to help those in poor areas. The FBI felt they were a threat It represented a more militant Civil Rights Movement Huey Newton arrested for Murder, leading to a Free Huey campaign Cleveland Sellers shot while trying to desegregate a bowling alley in the Orangeburg Massacre

Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr
April, 1968, while aiding in a strike for sanitation workers, Martin Luther King was shot outside of his hotel room at the Lorraine Motel. Robert Kennedy announced it to a crowd, and urged for nonviolence. However, riots did break out in several cities, most notably in Washington D.C. The area wouldn’t be rebuilt for decades. The Civil Rights Movement would continue towards militant notions nationwide.
