The need to keep ahead The need to increase their own reputation Even at the expense of lying!

As one side was perceived to get ahead the other felt the need to catch up = spiral =ARMS RACE

The huge destructive power So great it would AVOID war

MAD – Mutually Assured Destruction By 1960 both Superpowers had MASSIVE weapon capability These could be delivered in a variety of ways – land, air, sea
