Expresses likes and dislikes
Lec2.1 The verb: GUSTAR Expresses likes and dislikes To express things you like: me gusta + [singular noun] Me gusta el arte. I like the art. or me gustan + [plural noun] Me gustan las clases. I like the classes. * NOTE: Don’t use ‘YO’ with this structure.

To express what you like to do: me gusta + [infinitive(s) verb]
Me gusta dibujar. I like to draw. (To me, it is pleasing, to draw.) Le gusta bailar y cantar.* She likes to dance and sing. (To her, it is pleasing, to dance and to sing.) * NOTE: Gustar is not plural w/more than one activity.

a + [name/pronoun] le(s) gusta(n) A Cristina le gusta trabajar.
To clarify who is referenced add the personal ‘a’: a + [name/pronoun] le(s) gusta(n) A Cristina le gusta trabajar. ‘To Christina’, she likes to work. (To Christina, to her, it is pleasing to work.) A Samuel le gustan las ventanas. ‘To Samuel’, he likes the windows. (To Samuel, to him, they are pleasing, the windows.) A ellos les gusta estudiar. ‘To them’, they like to study. (To them, to them, it is pleasing to work.) A las chicas les gustan los sábados. ‘To the girls’, they like Saturdays. (To the girls, to them, they are pleasing, the Saturdays.)

No me gustan los lápices. No te gustan ni el borrador ni la tiza.
To express a dislike, insert the word no before the expression. No me gustan los lápices. I don’t like the pencils. No te gustan ni el borrador ni la tiza. You don’t like neither the eraser nor the chalk. No, no les gusta el horario. No, they don’t like the schedule.

Práctica: I like the books. / The books are “pleasing to me”.
Me gustan los libros. 2. You like to walk. / Walking is “pleasing to you”. Te gusta caminar. 3. We like Math. Nos gustan las matemáticas. 4. They like the chairs in the library. Les gustan las sillas de la biblioteca. 5. No, I don’t like the clock. No, no me gusta el reloj. 6. (To Amelia,) She likes to teach. / Teaching is “pleasing to Amelia”. A Amelia le gusta enseñar.
