A World of Ideas Salons utilized to meet and discuss ideas, look at artists and musicians. The Encyclopedia Denis Diderot thought a large set of books with many articles and essays would show current information on science, technology, and art. French Government and Church NOT happy. Baroque vs Classical The Baroque period is seen as ornate, extravagant. Lots of columns, domes, vibrant paints, etc. etc. Classical Period is simpler and elegant. Columns still prevalent, but the architecture is simpler.

Music and literature during the Enlightenment
Baroque style of Bach and Handel is loud and grand. The symphony of Haydn and Mozart are more elegant, not as loud. Literature Novels become popular, telling stories in the lay language of the period. Robinson Crusoe Daniel Defoe.

Enlightenment and the Monarchy
Some monarchs embraced the enlightenment ideas. Enlightened Despot Ultimate goal was to make their rule more effective, and make country stronger. Frederick the Great “I must enliven my people, cultivate their morals… make them as happy as the means at my disposal permit.” Joseph II Freedom of worship, abolished serfdom, and legal reform.
