1
Organelles – Chapter 6
2
Plasma Membrane Serves as a boundary between cell and environment
Controls passage of materials into and out of cell
3
Nucleus Manages all cell functions
Contains cells genetic material – DNA Nuclear envelope with pores Contains one or more nucleoli
4
Cytoskeleton Network of proteins
Contains hollow microtubules and thick, solid microfilaments Provides shape, internal organization, and movement
5
Lysosomes Site of intracellular digestion
Digests worn out cell parts, invaders, and food particles
6
Centrioles Occurs in pairs during cell division
Help the cell to divide during mitosis Only found in animal and protist cells
7
Cell Wall Formed by living plant cells
Made of cellulose; rigid support structure Protects plants and allows for turgor pressure
8
Mitochondria Enclosed in a double-membrane
Provides the cell with energy Most reactions of cellular respiration occur here Contains small amounts of DNA and RNA May have several hundred per cell
9
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
Tubular membrane system that provides surface area for chemical reactions Plays a central role in biosynthesis reactions in the cell Transports compounds made Rough ER is studded with ribosomes Smooth ER lacks ribosomes
10
Golgi Apparatus System of flattened sacs
Modifies, sorts, and packages macromolecules in vesicles for secretion or for delivery to other organelles.
11
Cytosol/Cytoplasm Semi-fluid material surrounding organelles
Cellular activities occur here Contains enzymes that catalyze cellular reactions
12
Chloroplasts Membrane system forms thylakoids which contains light absorbing pigments All reactions of photosynthesis occur in chloroplasts Found in plants and plant-like protists
13
Vacuoles Store Materials such as:
Water, food, digestive enzymes, nutrients, and waste products Occupies about 50% of plant cells volume
14
Ribosomes Produces Proteins
Found in the cytoplasm and on the Rough Endoplasmic reticulum
