The Attention-Getter (possibly the most important part of the speech)
Sets the stage and tone Grabs the audience’s attention Does NOT reveal the topic 20-45 seconds

Types of Attention-Getters
Anecdote or brief story Quotation Startle the audience Role-play Question the audience

Thesis (aka Central Idea)
Reveal the topic Take a position on the topic if appropriate.

Preview Tell the audience clearly what your main points will be
Use numbers or similar (“first, second, third” or “first, next, last.”) “First, I will trace the development of . . ., I will then explain And finally, I give implications . . .”

The Conclusion Reinforce the central idea Signal the end of the speech
A restatement of the thesis A summary of the main points Signal the end of the speech Refer to the attention-getter Slow down a little so the audience will know you are nearing the end.
