1 Why our relationship with God really matters

2 John 1:1 If the bible was to be a person it would be Jesus. Reading the bible is about getting to know who Jesus is. Important to understand so we can have an authentic relationship with God.

3 John 6:67-68 When Jesus asks His disciples whether they want to go, they tell Him three things. They have no one else to go to. He has the words of eternal life. They know he is Christ, the Son of the Living God.

4 They have no one else to go to.
They had left everyone and everything behind to follow Him so who could help them now? They’re His disciples, no one else’s. A core thing we need to have for an authentic relationship with God is being completely devoted to Him and not anyone or anything else. It means that outside of God, there’s nothing.

5 2. He has the words of eternal life.
Having an authentic relationship with God requires us to believe what He says and what the bible says. The disciples have only heard Jesus talk about eternal life, He hasn’t died yet, He hasn’t risen from the grave, He hasn’t proved it to them. At this juncture, they’ve heard John 3:16, but Jesus hasn’t gone to the cross yet. So they know what He’s said, and in spite of a difficult teaching, they’re still choosing to believe. You need to believe what the bible says.

6 3. He is the Christ, the Son of the Living God.
Our relationship with God is all about knowing God as a person, not just knowing about Him, but knowing Him intimately. He already knows you, so we get to spend the rest of our time knowing Him and understanding Him and having a conversation with Him about life and about His character and about who He is.
