Direct Measurement of Casimir Forces in Near-critical Binary Fluids
Simon G. J. Mochrie, Department of Physics, Yale University, New Haven, CT X coord Using our low noise setup we are able to resolve 0.5 nm steps, which are shown below, and are poised to carry out precise measurements of critical Casimir forces. Optical Tweezers: We have constructed a novel low noise, high precision optical tweezers setup based on trap sharing, in order to measure the tiny critical Casimir forces that arise when critical fluctuations are confined between colloidal beads.
