10 “Shake it Off” Florence and the Machine

11 Song Analysis Paragraph
“Shake it Off” by Florence and the Machine is about conquering one’s fears and pursuing one’s goals in life. Whether listening to this song as it blares through my headphones on a night run or as it streams through the speakers of my car as I sit in traffic, it always puts me in a motivational mood. The song not only has an addicting beat, but her lyrics reveal deep thought. For instance, she uses a powerful metaphor with the line “every demon wants his pound of flesh.” In the context of the song, she is comparing evil people who are only out for themselves to demons; the “pound of flesh” they want is a metaphor for evil people’s desire to only take things from others for their own needs. “Shake it Off” is a powerful song that utilizes figurative language to get its message across: conquer your fears.
