Turn in homework packet 3!
Warm up: What is one difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells? Flush: What teacher from elementary school is most memorable to you? Why? Turn in homework packet 3!
2
How have bacteria survived?
Bacteria are such small and simple cells, so how have they survived millions of years?
3
Characteristics of All Cells
Directions: read and annotate the text individually, then define all the underlined words by using context clues from the text. You may work as a team to create your definitions
4
Characteristics of All Cells
1. Can synthesize new materials 2. Can transport items within their cells or system 3. Can excrete excess waste 4. Have genetic material that directs the functions of the cell 5. Can respond to stimuli 6. Can maintain homeostasis How do simple cells like bacteria, do all these things!?
5
Unicellular Adaptations
Adaptation: A specific characteristic an organisms has that allows it to survive better in its environment 1. Contractile Vacuole 2. Cilia 3. Flagella 4. Pseudopods 5. Eyespots
6
Contractile Vacuole Unicellular organisms have vacuoles that store water They can contract and release water, or expand to store more water They can respond to the amount of water in the environment
7
Cilia Cilia are small hairs that are on the outside of prokaryotic cells They allow the cell to move towards or away a stimulus
8
Flagella Flagella also help bacteria move
Flagella also help bacteria move They can move forward, or ‘tumble’ They can move towards … Chemicals- chemotaxis Light- phototaxis
9
Pseudopods A pseudopod is a projection from the cytoplasm
They can be used to engulf food
10
Eyespots In some unicellular organisms, they have an eyespot
An eyespot helps the bacteria detect light or chemicals so the bacteria can respond to its environment
11
Adaptation For Sale You will (individually) create a for sale sign for a specific adaptation You can choose from one of the adaptations we discussed today In your poster please include: The name of the adaptation A picture Why a cell would want to buy it An example of a type of cell that already ‘owns’ it A catchy phrase or tag line to attract buyers An explanation of how the adaptation allows the cell to survive A cost for the adaptation
