The Roman Empire stretched from Britain to Egypt. They controlled the Mediterranean Sea Augustus showed great respect for the Senate and did not act like a king.

2 4. Rome took some slaves but most conquered people remained free.
5. They broke the empire up into provinces with a governor supported by an army to help control the territories. 6. They did not force their way of life on people, instead they wanted peaceful provinces.

3 7. Rome wanted raw material from conquered people and wanted them to buy her goods and pay taxes.
8. Many conquered people learned to speak Latin and worship Roman gods. 9. Caligula and Nero were two of the worst emperors and may have been insane.

5 Greek Influence on Rome Religion Romans & Greeks were polytheistic.
Roman gods & heroes have Greek counterparts: Zeus was like Jupiter Athena was like Minerva Heracles was like Hercules

6 Building on Ideas Both Greeks and Romans valued learning Under Romans architecture and engineering blossomed. Architecture & technology Roman architecture copied Etruscan style. 2. They used arches to build larger structures

7 3. They used concrete, a mixture of sand, stone, cement, & water.
4. The Colosseum was an arena that held 50,000 spectators. 5. They often flooded the arena to have mock naval battles. 6. Romans built roads to connect the Empire.

8 A famous saying is “All roads lead to Rome”.
The aqueduct carried water long distances. These were huge lines of arches with channels on top that carried water to the city.

9 Roman Law Cicero said Roman law couldn’t be bent or influenced by money or power. Justinian created a code of justice that we use today: Freedom of thought You can’t be removed from your home

10 The burden of proof is on the accuser
You have the right to face your accuser If there is reasonable doubt the person must be assumed innocent
