& Sustainable Development Goals
Climate Change & Sustainable Development Goals Students to give ideas about what they think climate change is - As a class create a list of what they associate with climate change.
2
Goals & Articles Goal 13: Climate Action Goal 14: Life Below Water
Goal 15: Life on land Article 6 (survival and development) Every child has the right to life. Governments must do all they can to ensure that children survive and grow up healthy.

What is climate change? Climate change is a large-scale, long- term shift in the planet's weather patterns or average temperatures. What is the difference between Global Warming & Climate Change? “Global warming” applies to the long- term trend of rising average global temperatures “Climate change” is a broader term that reflects the fact that carbon pollution does more than just warm our planet. Carbon pollution is also changing rain and snow patterns and increasing the risk of intense storms and droughts. Causes & Effects: Examples
Transport Construction Agriculture Burning fossil fuels Industrial processes Deforestation and land use changes Waste – landfills Electricity and heat Effects Higher temperatures – more disasters e.g. storms, floods & droughts When there are droughts or flooding, people need to move out of their homes With weather changes, crops can be affected Warmer air can make rainfall patterns more extreme Changing weather patterns Animal extinction Higher sea levels Students should discuss this before being shown some of the answers. Focus on the effects – why this affects the world. Why is it an issue? What can it lead to?
5
Tree Activity In the workbook, fill in the clouds and the roots of the Climate Change Tree Next to the cloud, write down some causes of climate change (E.g. Co2 emissions from car exhausts) On the roots of the tree, write down the effects of climate change (e.g. Greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere and causing global warming)
6
How should we respond? Now, consider what we can do to reduce the effects of climate change. Think about: What we could do as individuals (e.g. not using too much electricity) What your school could do (e.g. recycling) What the global community could do (e.g. cutting down on carbon emissions) We will talk through this as a class If there is time the students should create a poster showing their ideas.
