More parts of airway affected…leads to more severe illness Closely related organs get affected e.g. ears (recurrent ear infection), throat (tonsilitis), throat/oropharyyx (refusal of feeds), diaphragm (vomiting whilst coughing) Impaired daily activities. Poor quality of life. Low self image Impaired growth Death

The 5 As of proper management of CAPIC
Avoid child’s exposure to irritants Active immunisation. Ensure that your child is fully immunized for age. Avoid self-medication because some drugs may only momentarily suppress the problem rather than solve it. By the time the problem re-surfaces, it is more difficult to treat. Airway clearance. To achieve this, the following are helpful: use a bulb syringe to suck out secretions from your child’s nose, Lay child on his/her side; or sit him/her up. Active doctor management. See your DOCTOR if symptoms persist after 2 days or IMMEDIATELY if danger signs are present

Difficulty in breathing e.g. chest indrawing Noisy breathing Vomiting while coughing Fever Restlessness, Excessive crying Coloured nasal discharge Refusal of feeds
