1 Criminal Intent Criminal laws generally punish only those who have criminal intent, a guilty mind, the so called mens rea

2 Criminal Intent usually falls into these 4 categories
1. Specific Intent 2. General Intent 3. Criminal Negligence 4. Strict Liability

3 Specific intent Easiest to define, it means the person intended just the result that happened. The person did it on pourpose.

4 General Intent This means that the person either knew the result would occur or consciously disregarded the extreme likelihood that it would happen

5 Criminal Negligence This means that a person does some act unintentionally but with extreme lack of care.

6 Strict Liability This means no mental state is required at all. Anyone doing the act is guilty regardless of intent. (running a red light)
