Criminal Intent Criminal laws generally punish only those who have criminal intent, a guilty mind, the so called mens rea

Criminal Intent usually falls into these 4 categories
1. Specific Intent 2. General Intent 3. Criminal Negligence 4. Strict Liability

Specific intent Easiest to define, it means the person intended just the result that happened. The person did it on pourpose.

General Intent This means that the person either knew the result would occur or consciously disregarded the extreme likelihood that it would happen

Criminal Negligence This means that a person does some act unintentionally but with extreme lack of care.

Strict Liability This means no mental state is required at all. Anyone doing the act is guilty regardless of intent. (running a red light)
