Founded as Proprietary colony (owner or manager) King Charles II granted land to 8 English nobleman known as the Lords Proprietors. Repayment for their loyalty and help reclaiming the throne. Given complete power over ruling colony. They hoped to make a profit by charging a quitrent-annual rent on land. John Locke hired to write Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina. Created to govern colony. Addressed religious toleration. Included a provision for establishing social class system. Never carried out. Designed to attract settlers.

Settlers first came from the British colony of Barbados. Brought well-developed slave system with them. Established first permanent settlement-Charles Town. Other settlers came from other European countries Searching for religious freedom. Attracted by Fundamental Constitutions. Came from diverse religious backgrounds: French Huguenots and Judaism.

Layout of streets and homes was random and lacked organization. Town population grew too fast causing overcrowding. Town moved to Oyster Point in 1680. Streets laid out in a grid Land set aside for a church, town house and public square. After the American Revolution, Charles Town renamed Charleston.

8 The Barbados Connection
As sugar cane plantations increased, labor needs increased too. First, planters used indentured servants and prisoners for labor. Discovered slave labor more profitable because lifetime labor unlike indentured servant and prison labor. West Africans brought in as slave labor. Wealthy planters controlled island’s economy-”plantocracy.” Only landowners could vote and hold office. Most people living on island had little power. By the 1660s, Barbados overpopulated and many poor white colonists left to find fortunes elsewhere.

9 The Barbados Connection
By 1670, West African slaves outnumbered the white colonists. Fear of uprisings and slave rebellions arose. Strict slave codes were passed to control slaves. Law gave complete power to slave owners. Slave owners could abuse, torture or kill slaves without being punished. Slave codes would become model for similar laws in SC. SC would be colonized by a very diverse group of people. Emigrants from Barbados had advantages over European colonists. Familiarity with climate. Immunity to diseases.
