Texas Youth Commission Website Redesign
Hi I’m Jim Malmros My topic was a redesign of the Texas Youth Commission’s website.
2
Topics The Way back machine! (or the current site) What I did!
How did I did it! Issues The Texas Youth commission is one of the most progressive and successful juvenile corrections agencies in the country. Does it’s website…it’s gateway for many people live up to this reputation? I am going to talk about: The Way back Machine or the current website

The Way Back Machine What the site is now!
About TYC Programs & Facilities Research & Data In The News Prevention Employment Search Home Menus…menus everywhere No discernible structure Confusing Layout Link TYC Let me take you back in time…it is 1990…what would you expect a website to look like?... Well let me take you there…. Lets take a look at what I am talking about here… Menus Menus everywhere but not one of them the same I don’t know where I am half the time and I work here! What information is placed in each topic in not abundantly clear! I have no idea how to get there….Is there a search? Where is information on the youths? What Did I Do? New Category headers About Us News Youth Prevention
Juvenile Justice Open Gov Facilities The facilities News Youth Programs Youth Demographics Statistics and Reports Prevention Employment Consistent menus/Navigation Redesign: TYC redesign The First thing and perhaps the hardest thing for was the re-organization of the content. From the categories on the old site I ended up Five. Lets take a look… Used a consistent menuing through out the site These categories should allow for future expansion of the site. {as I will discuss later there is a lot more to add to the site} I figured that each main header section could have several sub-header sections (Show the facilites page) Used a consistent navigation through out the site (Explained organization (site map) of site ) How is the sturcture now? Not balanced at this time…though there is plenty of more content that could be added later. (Reviewed site navigation ) How do you get around the site… 2 menus Main Secondary and the Footprints There are 50 pages 3 pdf files 2 word documents Should be level A complanent though 90% of level two (AA) is also meet

How did I do this? Researched other Sites Initial Site Structure
User Input Co-workers ideas Current Usage Diagrams, Wireframes and Templates Revised….and Revised Ok why did I make some of these descions? First I make a intial site sturcture desgin/of flowchart for the stucture of the site Next thing I did was to take the this document and show it around to different people at work trying and gathered their comments While do this I was given access to the current usage data This lead me to keeping the Prevention and the Employment sections as main sections (over 75% of the usage is in these two areas) As for the other sections the Youth and About US sections for me are where the most amount of work was and needs to be in dividing out the current site structure. Youth is about the youths and the numbers and the About Us section is just that about the facilities and procedures of the Texas Youth commission. The next thing that I did was to look at other juvenile corrections pages to get an idea of what was out there. Then I look some of what I thought where the better sites and I created a wireframe (using power point) Started with a rough low fideality frame using Denium…Just to get an idea of what I was thinking about then got more specific as I went along. Created the Main Page and one of the Secondary pages and used them as template for the rest of the site. Revised and Revised… (Oh my!)

Issues? TOO MUCH Content Revision --- Revision --- Revision
Could I have gone further? The main problem that I ran into was that the TYC’s site has a lot of content…100’s of pages. I feel that I barley scratched the surface in the pages that I did add in. Revision….My initial ideas changed as I went along and still I find things that I would (if I had the time) like to improve on. Though while I hope that my redesign/re-architecture of the TYC website goes a long way to bringing the site Into the 21centuray I wonder if I could have pushed a little bit further in the design. I felt that with a gov. website that I had to maintain a certain level in the design…nothing too crazy. Any questions? Thank you all.
