Replaces the previous conventions in 1958 and 1960 in order to update the treaty
United Nations regulates and enforces the treaty

This treaty requires countries to adopt regulations and laws that protect the marine environment around them from pollution.
It creates a 12 mile limit on how much of the sea a country can claim.
Promotes peaceful use of the seas and how its resources are utilized.
Controls the overexploitation of the sea’s resources, such as overfishing and extraction of deep sea minerals.
