Costume Vocabulary Hand Sewing Needles – Different sizes and lengths; used to sew by hand. Seam Ripper – Used to take out sewing mistakes. Sewing Gauge – 6” long with slide, helps you mark a hem or smaller amounts of fabric. Straight Pins – Used to hold pattern to fabric or 2 layers of fabric together. Must lay flat on fabric. Shears – Used for heavy duty cutting of fabric. One handle larger than other. Tracing Paper – Waxy coated paper which transfers pattern markings. Tracing Wheel – Handle & metal wheel with teeth, used for tracing.

Costume Vocabulary Costume – Clothes worn by one playing a part or dressing up in disguise. Period – A specific time frame in history. Silhouette – the outline of an item; referenced to the period. Costume Plot – a list of every character and costume for each scene of a play. Costume Parade - walking onstage in full costume to determine comfort, movement and proper lighting.
