New York’s defense outnumbered and retreat in late August.

3. Battle of Trenton Washington’s army needed a victory
Marched 9 miles through sleet/snow to Trenton, New Jersey in a surprise attack at 6:30 a.m. killing 30 and capturing 918.

4. Victory at Saratoga
General John Burgoyne (British) plan was to take troops down a route of lakes from Canada to Albany to meet Howe’s troops.
4,000 redcoats, 3000 mercenaries, and 1,000 Mohawk sent.

5. General Horatio Gates commander of the Northern Dept
General Horatio Gates commander of the Northern Dept. of the Continental Army clash with General Burgoyne.
Gates troops finally surround Burgoyne at Saratoga and his troops surrender on Oct. 17, 1777.
