2 Print Conventions The Water Cycle
There is only so much water on Earth. It keeps going around in what is called the water cycle. Rain falls to Earth and collects in puddles, rivers, and oceans. The sun heats the water and causes it evaporate into the air. The water vapor that forms rises and makes clouds. When the clouds cool, the water vapor turns back into water and falls as rain. To learn more about the water cycle, read The Water Cycle by Frances Purslow.

Print Conventions DUCKS There are many ducks on ponds and lakes in spring. Take binoculars and look for them. Mallards The most commonly seen ducks are the mallards. They are easy to recognize because the male has a bright green head. The female builds a nest near the edge of the water. Mallards eat seeds and water plants. Wood Ducks Wood ducks are beautiful birds. The male has a purple and green crest on his head. The females nest in trees, so you will see these ducks in a wooded area near water. Wood ducks eat water plants and seeds they find in the woods. Bold face type is used for titles and heads.

8 Italic type is used for book titles.
Print Conventions SPORTS BOOKS I love sports. I watch sports on television, and I read anything and everything I can about sports. I play baseball and soccer, but I know a lot about other sports ,too. That’s why I really like books by author Matt Christopher. He is my favorite author because he writes awesome sports stories. One of my favorites is The Kid Who Only Hit Homers. This story proves that anyone can improve with practice. If you like football, read The Great Quarter Back Switch. You’ll never guess the ending of this one! Italic type is used for book titles.

9 Print Conventions Collecting Arrowheads
You might think that collecting something doesn’t sound like a very exciting hobby. Let me tell you that once you get started, you won’t be able to stop! I began collecting arrowheads when I was about six years old. My grandpa is a farmer, and I started looking for arrowheads after he plowed the fields in spring. When you hold an arrowhead in your hand and think about how old it is, WOW! Now I look for arrowheads all the time. I’ve found quite a few nice ones although some have broken tips. I have a great book that helps me identify them. It’s called Rocks, Fossils, and Arrowheads by Laura Evert. There are lots of other things to collect if you don’t want to look for arrowheads. To get some good ideas, read Ultimate Guide to Collecting by Kristin R. Stephens. You’ll find lots of super ideas for fun collections.
