2 Western powers refussed to allow Stalin to take control of Berlin
Each side, east and west attacked the other through propaganda from Stalin knew that if he shot the planes down then this would be an acto of war. West Germany was created ibn 1946 with the French, British and USA joining together. By the end of 1949, Stalin reopened communications with the west. Stalin blocked all allied supply routes to West Berlin. It was seen as a defeat for Stalin and a victory for the Allies and Caplitalism. Stalin wanted control of Berlin. A new currency was created in West Germany This event sent the path for the Cold War, threat of aggression but a fear of full scale war. Both sides, west and east increased their amount of arms from 1945 to 1948. This continued for the next ten months. The allies airlifted supplies into West Berlin. Stalin was angry about the reorganisation of West Berlin As a result Berlin became permanently divided. Berlin was officially in the Soviet zone Germany remained divided for the next 41 years. This was called the Berlin airlift. Many people left Berlin. There were enormous shortages in West Berlin.
