It forces students to think instead of “spitting back” an answer. The perseverance skills taught with model drawing are what students need on the EOG to successfully answer word problems.

Students I like drawing a bar model because it helps me understand what I’m doing. I like drawing a bar model because I can write an Answer Sentence. Parents It helps my child attack word problems in a way that they could not before.

Bar Model Drawing Steps
Read the entire story Underline the question Write answer sentence (mmm statement) Who is the story about? What is the story about? Draw starting line and unit bar/bars Read each sentence 1 at a time… Add information to drawing and check off sentence… Think about where to put the question mark (Part or Whole?) 7.
