2 Famous People John Fitch launched the 1st steamboat in the nation at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787.

3 Famous People Fitch’s Invention managed to catch the attention of Colonel John Stevens of Hoboken John Stevens demonstrated the 1st railroad in the United States.

4 Definitions A charter is an official document giving a person permission to do something. New bridges and turnpikes improved transportation in NJ. Canals provided a water link between cities and brought coal from Pennsylvania.

5 Railroads came into use in the 1830’s and soon controlled transportation in our state.

8 Famous People Alexander Hamilton came up with the idea to build a planned city, named Paterson. Alexander Hamilton helped found the 1st planned industrial city in the United States. He was the first Secretary of the Treasury. was the first Secretary of the Treasury

9 Famous People John Colt convinced the United States Navy to use cotton cloth for its ships’ sails instead of linen.

10 Famous People Lucy Stone was an important leader in the struggle for women’s rights. Stone was the first woman from Massachusetts to earn a college degree She spoke out for women's rights and against slavery at a time when women were discouraged and prevented from public speaking. Once called "the morning star of the woman's rights movement.” Stone was the first recorded American woman to keep her own last name upon marriage.

11 Famous People Dorothea Dix is a reformer who helped mentally ill people in Massachusetts and New Jersey. Protests the lack of women’s voting rights. Fountain for thirsty horses Dix gave to the city of Boston to honor the MSPCA
