1 Teacher Guide This lesson is designed to teach kids to ask a critical thinking question that you can’t just put into a search box to solve. To do that, we encourage them with smaller questions that search can help them answer. Make sure that you read the notes for each slide: they not only give you teaching tips but also provide answers and hints so you can help the kids if they are having trouble. Remember, you can always send feedback to the Bing in the Classroom team at You can learn more about the program at bing.com/classroom and follow the daily lessons on our Partners In Learning site. Want to extend today’s lesson? Consider using Skype in the Classroom to arrange for your class to chat with another class in today’s location. And if you are using Windows 8, you can also use the Bing apps to learn more about this location and topic; the Travel and News apps in particular make great teaching tools. This lesson is designed to teach the Common Core State Standard: Reading: Informational Text CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.7.7Compare and contrast a text to an audio, video, or multimedia version of the text, analyzing each medium's portrayal of the subject (e.g., how the delivery of a speech affects the impact of the words). CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.7.2Determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.7.3Analyze the interactions between individuals, events, and ideas in a text (e.g., how ideas influence individuals or events, or how individuals influence ideas or events).

2 How accurate is the comparison between the Glénan Islands and the Island of Tahiti?
© Andia/Latitude Stock Having this up as kids come in is a great settle down activity. You can start class by asking them for thoughts about the picture or about ideas on how they could solve the question of the day.

3 How accurate is the comparison between the Glénan Islands and the Island of Tahiti?
A dredging boat stirs up algae to harvest in the shallow Atlantic waters near France’s Glénan Islands. But that’s hardly the most interesting thing about the archipelago. Open only for the summer season, the Glénans are a popular weekend getaway. Sailing, riding in glass-bottom boats, and other nautical activities are popular. The white sand beaches and a lagoon shared by the nine main islands have prompted many to call Glénan “the Breton Tahiti.” Depending on time, you can either have students read this silently to themselves, have one of them read out loud, or read it out loud yourself.

4 How accurate is the comparison between the Glénan Islands and the Island of Tahiti?
1 Maps Search/Thinking Where are the Glénan Islands located? Where is Tahiti located? Compare and contrast these two locations. 2 Web Search How are both the Glénan Islands and Tahiti connected to France? 3 How does the government of the Glénan Islands and Tahiti compare? 4 Image Search Find images of both the Glénan Islands and Tahiti. Do you notice any differences visually? 5 How does the climate in the Glénan Islands and Tahiti compare? There are a couple of ways to use this slide, depending on how much technology you have in your classroom. You can have students find answers on their own, divide them into teams to have them do all the questions competitively, or have each team find the answer to a different question and then come back together. If you’re doing teams, it is often wise to assign them roles (one person typing, one person who is in charge of sharing back the answer, etc.)

5 Minutes You can adjust this based on how much time you want to give kids. If a group isn’t able to answer in 5 minutes, you can give them the opportunity to update at the end of class or extend time.

You can ask the students verbally or let one of them come up and insert the answer or show how they got it. This way, you also have a record that you can keep as a class and share with parents, others.

1 Maps Search/Thinking Where are the Glénan Islands located? Where is Tahiti located? Compare and contrast these two locations. Using the “maps” link on the Bing search page, and the search terms, separately, “Glenan Islands” and “Tahiti”, find the locations here: Glenan Islands: Tahiti: Students should describe the locations and make comparisons based on where they are in the world, surroundings and other factors

2 Web Search How are both the Glénan Islands and Tahiti connected to France? (Possible queries: “glenan islands France” “tahiti France”) From Wikipedia ( regarding the Glenan Islands: The Glénan islands (French: Îles des Glénan or Archipel des Glénan, Breton: Inizi Glenan) are an archipelago located off the coast of France. They are located in the south of Finistère, near Concarneau and Fouesnant, and comprise seven major islands: Saint-Nicolas, the Loc'h, Penfret, Cigogne, Drenec, Bananec, and Brunec. In addition, there are over a dozen smaller islets. From Wikipedia ( regarding the Tahiti: Tahiti is the largest island in the Windward group of French Polynesia; an overseas collectivity of the French Republic, sometimes referred to as an overseas country.[3] The island is located in the archipelago of the Society Islands in the central Southern Pacific Ocean, and is divided into two parts: The bigger, northwestern part Tahiti Nui and the smaller, southeastern part Tahiti Iti. …The island was proclaimed a colony of France in 1880 although it was not until 1946 that the indigenous Tahitians were legally authorised to be French citizens.

3 Web Search How does the government of the Glénan Islands and Tahiti compare? (Possible queries: “glenan islands government” “tahiti government”) From two Wikipedia sources for clarification ( Administratively, the islands belong to the commune of Fouesnant. ( Fouesnant (Fouenant or Fouen in Breton) is a commune in the Finistère department of Brittany in north-western France. Fouesnant is bordered to the south by the Baie de La Forêt. From Wikipedia ( As a French colony: Despite a local assembly and government, French Polynesia is not in a free association with France, like the Cook Islands with New Zealand. As a French overseas collectivity, the local government has no competence in justice, education, security and defense. Services in these areas are directly provided and administered by the Government of France, including the Gendarmerie (which also polices rural and border areas in European France), and French military forces. The collectivity government retains control over health, town planning, and the environment.[16] The highest representative of the State in the territory is the High Commissioner of the Republic in French Polynesia (French: Haut commissaire de la République).

5 Web Search How does the climate in the Glénan Islands and Tahiti compare? (Possible queries: “glenan islands climate” “tahiti climate”) From EnezGreen ( Benefiting from the proximity of the Gulf Stream, the archipelago has a temperate oceanic climate and is renowned for its microclimate. It receives less rainfall than the mainland, with lower thermal amplitude. The average water temperature in winter is around 7 to 10°C, while the average temperature in summer ranges between 14 and 18°C in August. The presence of a thermocline layer is noted at 15 to 18m deep in summer. Few areas of the archipelago apart from the Room and the east are sheltered from the dominant winds blowing from the west. From Go Tahiti ( French Polynesia enjoys warm, tropical weather year-round. Cooled by the gentle breezes of the Pacific, the climate of these islands is sunny and pleasant. The average ocean temperature is in the low 80’s. Because Tahiti and her Islands are below the Equator, the seasons are the reverse of those in the Northern Hemisphere. Roughly speaking, there are two seasons: from November through April the climate is warmer and more humid, with daily high temperatures of about 85 F and lows of 70F at night. More rain falls during the warmer season, but there are also many lovely sunny days with refreshing trade-winds during these months. In fact, during the period of November through March Tahiti still averages more sunshine hours than Honolulu. From May through October the climate is cooler and drier with daily high temperatures of about 82F and lows of 70F at night. Finally, high islands (such as Tahiti, Moorea or Bora Bora) feature micro-climates related to their altitudes and exposition. Eastern coasts are more exposed to trade winds and consequently receive more rainfalls than the western coasts that are more sheltered.
