My Identity Collage project
2
About the collage… As part of the first unit, we will be exploring various texts where characters embark on a journey to find their own voice. Along this journey, they may struggle with finding and expressing their true identities. Prior to exploring the texts as a class, it is important to explore the identities within our classroom as well.
3
Brainstorm… Consider the following questions: • What do you look like?
• Where were you born? • Who are your family members? • What style of clothes do you wear? • What kind of music do you listen to? • What are your favorite sports or hobbies?
4
Find Images… After considering what defines your identity, your next task is to find images to create a collage that visually represents your identity. Here are some possibilities: photographs magazine/newspaper cut-outs words or phrases pictures from the internet
5
Present your collage… On an 8 ½ by 11 inch piece of paper create a collage of the paragraph, images, and words. Arrange and glue them in a visually appealing fashion. Be prepared to share this with your classmates and for your collage to be posted somewhere in the room.
6
Write a paragraph… Now that you have found images or words that convey your identity, you need to answer the main question: What qualities define your identity? Write an organized one paragraph essay (five to eight sentences), that explains who you are. Point out two or three of your favorite images or words that reflect your identity. Explain why you included them. You do not need to refer to all the images you have chosen, but you must clearly convey what you believe makes up your identity.
