EDC Waste Objectives be the central entry point for waste data
manage this data, perform quality assurance and coordinate with Go4 partners be reference point for (policy) questions on (statistical) information/data on waste and associated environmental impacts develop and coordinate methodologies and indicators for policy assessment Environmental Data Centres – Progress report

EDC Waste: Progress since DIMESA 2008
Results from the 2008 data collection under the Waste Statistics Regulation: Detailed statistics on waste generation and treatment were published via the EDC Waste / Eurostat homepage As communicated by the Report of the Commission to the European Parliament and the Council in a report on the "Results of the pilot studies on waste statistics“: A Commission Regulation on statistics for the import and export of waste was prepared. After two data collections a Task Force developed proposals for the improvement of the Regulation >>> See agenda item 11 <<< Environmental Data Centres – Progress report

EDC Waste: Activities carried out
(cont.) Implementation of reporting obligations: collected online Waste Framework, Landfill, Hazardous Waste, Waste Oils, Sewage Sludge, Packaging Waste, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) the questionnaire on the implementation of the Directive on End-of-Live Vehicles (ELV) is currently open for reporting Time series (1995 – 2007) on municipal waste (– generated, – incinerated – landfilled + composted + recycled) were collected, validated and published as a Structural Indicator (SI) and Sustainable Development Indicator (SDI) Environmental Data Centres – Progress report

EDC Waste: Activities carried out
(cont.) Indicators Proposals for indicators to monitor the recycling targets for the new Waste Framework Directive were presented to DG Environment and to a Council Working Group, development is ongoing. Waste Shipment Regulation Preparatory work for the annual data collection on Waste Shipments is underway, together with the EEA and DG Environment. Environmental Data Centres – Progress report
14
EDC Waste: Activities carried out
(cont.) Policy support DG Environment was supported on ad-hoc questions from the European Parliament, e.g. on certain waste streams, on shipment of recyclables to China and on the effects of the economic downturn on prices for recyclables. Harmonisation, Integration, Streamlining Moreover, the team participates in relevant technical meetings organised by other Commission Services and the EEA, with the main intention in mind to streamline reporting obligations, to harmonise the classification used and to integrate reporting on waste and waste statistics wherever possible. EDC Waste: outlook Towards “full data centre services”
Continuously advance the website, platform for dialog with users “Overarching” IT services with other data centres, start within Eurostat … … but then connect better with the other 7 Provide analysis on highlighted waste streams: e.g. End-of-Life Vehicles Focus on Indicators, streamline with other indicator “owners” such as OECD, UN, EEA … Further integration of reporting: Harmonisation of classifications and nomenclatures … Waste Shipments … Prepare for Shared Environmental Information System (SEIS) … Environmental Data Centres – Progress report

Conclusions, so far The data centres, with its principal functions of streamlining and integrating of reporting and provision of consistent and quality assessed information, and by the coordination between the partner institutions, contributes notably to the improvement of data quality and availability. The role of each data centre will evolve over time as a result of the gradual development of a more decentralised shared information system. The additional responsibility of being the data centre gives pro-active support for this development within its thematic area and ensures interoperability with the data from the other centres.
