1 Why do perfectly normal children become monsters?

2 Fact or fiction? Agree = hands up. Disagree = hands down.

3 Lesson objectives. To know how the human machine changes during puberty. To understand that chemicals influence the changes. To understand how these changes allow the human machine to reproduce.

4 What is puberty? The space of time where children start to experience changes preparing them for adult life. Changes can... begin at varying times. can take various lengths of time for changes to happen. Can occur in any order.

5 Male changes... Voice ‘breaks’ – becomes deeper. Shoulders widen.
Hair begins to grow under the arms, on chest and face. Pubic hair grows. Begin to sweat more. Testes and penis get bigger. Testes begin producing sperm.

6 Female changes... Begin to sweat more. Underarm hair grows.
Breasts develop. Hips get wider. Ovaries start to release eggs. Pubic hair grows.

7 Hormones... Changes begin once the body begins to release chemicals called hormones. In females the hormones are mainly released from the ovaries. In males the hormones are mainly released from the testes

8 Hormones cont... Physical changes are not the only changes that occur during puberty. Many emotional changes occur We call this adolescence. Mood swings are a common form of this change. Acne or spots are also a result of the addition of lots more chemical hormones in your system.

9 Challenge... Imagine you are an agony aunt/uncle.
You have been asked to write a response to answer the concerns of a young person worried about what is/isnt happening. Pick one of the questions from the sheet. Try to explain what is happening and why it is happening.
