Vocabulary Strategy for Unfamiliar Words
You can use a glossary or a dictionary to find the meaning of a word you don't know. A glossary appears at the back of a book and lists important words from that book and their meanings. A dictionary is a separate book that lists words and their meanings, as well as other information about the words. Remember Some base words do not change when adding -ed, -ing, - er, and -est: greatest. Others do change: planned, leaving, heavier. Base words sometimes change spelling but not pronunciation when adding endings. 12/7/2018 copyright

Again Adding new endings to words sometimes changes the spelling of the base word. These changes can include doubling the consonant at the end of the word or changing the letter y to an i before adding the ending. 12/7/2018 copyright
