GM announces bankruptcy and owes the government of Canada and Ontario $1.3 billion. Once GM issues new preferred stock, Canada will hold 11.7% of new GM stock. Canadian dollar fell .2% to C$ per USD Magna, a Canadian carparts maker is chosen as the buyer for GM's Opel, over Italian carmaker Fiat. . 11,000 jobs to be cut around Europe proposed. Concern over the raising budget deficit is showing up in the currency market. The dollar index, which tracks the USD against the euro, yen, pound, Swiss franc, Canadian $, and Swedish krona dropped 4.9%. Euro strengthened 7% and pound appreciated 9.5%. Canaidan dollar also strengthened. 6/2/2009 Magna's contract with GM states they can't sell Opel in the US and China and the loan is being reviewed by the European Commision. Possible problems deter investors and Loonie devalues 6/3/2009 Risk adversion is caused when Canadian stocks drop from an 8 month high as energy shares fall. Deal is refuted by Chrysler, but courts will not block sale.

The Canadian gold and uranium production and exploration company,Frontier Development Group, was downgraded to “hold” from “speculative buy”. Two week low of CAD/USD Agnico-Eagle Mines in Canada announces that they are planning to more than quadruple output by 2010 and that gold production costs to rise to $350 per ounce. Goldman Sachs predicts the Loonie to gain over the Mexican peso as the economies recover at different paces. Canadian Finance Minister announces that he believes a global economic recovery isn't "far behind" and that Canada will "lead the way". 6/9/2009 Canadian hiring plans to drop to lowest since 1993 with factories being the weakest  Loonie appreciates slightly due to yesterdays news. 6/10/2009 US Representative Gary Peters says that the Chrysler sale to Fiat will protect jobs. Fiat is to buy Chrysler assets today Negative percent change for the Loonie 6/11/2009 Dry, cool weather may cause Canadian wheat production to drop 18% this year 6/11/009 Transportation equipment factories operated at less than half their potential.
