Similarities and Differences Between French and British Colonies
Chapter 3 Section 2 Pages 75-80
2
Generating Good Questions
Cause and Effect: The links between events though time, or between motivations and events. (one event causes another, or a motivation leads to an event). For example the disruption of trade routes to Asia (cause) made them search for new routes which led to European exploration which led to Imperialism (effect)
3
Generating Good Questions
Geographic Challenges and Issues: The way the land (for example, the location of rivers, the relative position of land masses) shape societies or the actions of people. For example Newfoundlanders were isolated from Canada for centuries which led to their own unique and distinct culture.
4
Generating Good Questions
Challenges of Coexistence; The way people of different collective (group) identities interact.
5
Generating Good Questions
Demographics: Data about populations, such as the distribution of people in a region, their ethnic origins, or their numbers.
6
Generating Good Questions
Imperialism: The objectives of France and Britain (in this case) to control the lands and peoples of North America
7
Generating Good Questions
Economic Structure: The way a society identifies and uses resources to meet the needs of people
8
Generating Good Questions
Social Structure The roles and responsibilities of people, including the way people govern themselves
9
Questions How would you describe Canadians today?
What makes Canadians Canadian? How are Canadians different from Americans? Can you think of some general character traits that most Canadians share? Work with a partner to answer the questions.
10
Good Questioning A good question will ask for more than just a yes or no answer. The response will be more in-depth. High quality question: What caused France to lose control of Acadia? High quality answer: France and Britain competed with each other for control of North America. Acadia became caught in this competition, and changed hands more than once.
11
Bad Questioning Example of low quality question:
When did France lose control of Acadia? Example of low quality response: Britain wanted Acadia
12
Cause and Effect Cause is the reason why something occurs.
Effect is what happens because of the occurrence.
