Free Body Diagrams at an Angle
2
Learning Targets Draw free body diagrams for objects in which forces are acting at an angle to the horizontal Calculate the net force on objects which forces are acting at an angle to the horizontal
3
Introduction Until now, the free body diagrams we have constructed have only included forces that act in directions that are strictly horizontal or strictly vertical In these situations, some simple addition and subtraction can be used to determine the net force on the object
4
Forces at an Angle In some cases, forces are directed at an angle to the horizontal. In such a situation, the force could be resolved into two components. These two components can be considered to replace the angled force
5
Determining the Horizontal Component
The horizontal component of a force vector can be calculated in the same way the horizontal vectors for velocity and displacement were calculated To solve for a horizontal force vectors: cos (angle) x hypotenuse = x component
6
Determining the Vertical Component
The vertical component of a force vector can be calculated in the same way the vertical vectors for velocity and displacement were calculated To solve for a vertical force vectors: sin(angle) x hypotenuse = y component
7
Sample Problem Analyze the following situations to determine the net force on the object.
8
Sample Problem 2 Analyze the situation below to determine the net force on the object
