1905 Nicholas II became Tsar in 1894
In 1905, about 100,000 Russians meet outside the Tsar’s Winter Palace in St. Petersburg They asked for Nicholas II to appear so he could be presented with a petition

The police open fire and charge the protestors on horseback Death toll ranges from several hundred to several thousand

Russia also loses the Russo-Japanese War in 1905
Under pressure, Nicholas II allows a Constitution to be written in 1905 Nicholas II also creates a Parliament, called a Duma

Failure of the Duma The Duma allows many political parties to come to power Nicholas II repeatedly dissolves the Duma and calls for new elections Assassinations and terrorism plagues Russia

Nicholas II tells his Prime Minister Petr Stolypin to take care of the problem
Stolypin creates quick military trials for suspected terrorists Those guilty are hung; thousands die Stolypin is assassinated in 1911

World War I WW I is a disaster for Russia Caused inflation
Caused food shortages 5 million Russian casualties (soldiers were sent to the front with no guns) In Nov. 1916, the Duma warns Nicholas II that he needs a constitutional gov’t
