: The Tudor Family, including Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I neglected democratic principles by restricting basic principles such a freedom of religion

3. 3. When Elizabeth I died, her cousin James I Stuart and his son Charles I were even worse. They ruled by divine right. Finally, the people wanted to destroy the monarchy so they started a Civil War. Those who supported the king were called Cavaliers.
Those who wanted to oust the king were called Roundheads. The Roundheads won and Charles I was executed on January 30, 1649

The people get frustrated with Cromwell and demanded the return of the Stuart family to the throne. Charles II Stuart was crowned.
This time period was known as the Restoration. He was known as the “Merry Monarch” because he pleased the people by allowing more freedoms.

The political parties in England invited James II daughter, Mary and her husband William of Orange to overthrow the king.
7. When William and Mary arrived in England, James II fled the country for France. This revolution was non-violent and is call the Glorious Revolution for this reason.

Under William and Mary, England was at last a firm Democratic nation. William and Mary signed the Bill of Rights and gave Parliament more power.
9. Today England has a Constitutional Monarchy and is one of the leading democratic countries in the world.
