The Problem: Sea level rise and strong weather are causing erosion in the Outer Banks Development of the islands has disrupted the natural balance of erosion and deposition As a result, the islands of the Outer Banks are disappearing

What should we do? Stop ocean overwash with sandbags, dunes, and jetties to protect the infrastructure? The islands could erode away. Allow the islands to revert to their natural state and move? The islands will remain, but billions of dollars in oceanfront development and tourism could be lost.
