2 Whiteboard: With which statement do you MOST agree? Why?
Strong nations should be able to control the trade of weaker nations. Imperialism most benefits weaker nations because it increases trade. Nations with sufficient military and trade powers should take territories to benefit themselves. Countries controlled by imperialist nations would not welcome colonial ties with the stronger nations even if the association resulted in increased trade.

3 Label as Spanish American War
The year is 1898, William McKinley is serving his second year as the President of the U.S. As a means to beat economic downturns and civilize the world the U.S. has turned to imperialism. One place the U.S. began to influence a large island 90 miles south of Florida, Cuba. The only issue was that Cuba belonged to Spain. Seeking self-rule Cuba was beginning to rebel against Spanish rule. Looking out for U.S. investments and upholding the Monroe Doctrine the U.S. began to take great interest in the Cuban rebellion. American newspapers made the Cuban rebellion developments front page material. The Monroe Doctrine was a US foreign policy regarding Latin American countries in It stated that further efforts by European nations to colonize land or interfere with states in North or South America would be viewed as acts of aggression, requiring U.S. intervention.

5 Spanish diplomat insulted President McKinley
New York Journal (Hearst) published the headline “The Worst Insult to the United States in Its History.” De Lome Letter (Feb 9, 1898) Spanish diplomat insulted President McKinley Became a true international scandal the U.S. public was outraged President demanded an apology, and the ambassador resigned.
